Terms of service

These cover the hosted service at homeaccounting.com. The software itself is licensed separately, under the AGPL-3.0 — if you run it yourself, the licence is your agreement and this page is not.

1. Who you are agreeing with

The service is operated by the maintainer of HomeAccounting as an individual. There is no company behind it yet. When one is formed, it will take over this agreement and we will say so on this page.

2. What you get

A hosted instance of HomeAccounting, free of charge, in beta. There is no uptime commitment, no support commitment, and no guarantee that a feature that works today works tomorrow. We do not take payment, so there is nothing to refund and no billing data to lose.

HomeAccounting is a bookkeeping tool. It is not a bank, not a payment service, and nothing it shows you is financial, tax or investment advice. Figures it derives from your records — balances, reports, categorisations — can be wrong, and you are the one who has to check them before relying on them.

3. Your account

• Keep your password to yourself. Anything done with your credentials is treated as done by you.
• Give us an email address that reaches you — it is the only way we can warn you about a security problem.
• You need to be old enough to enter a contract where you live.
• If you connect a bank, you are confirming you are entitled to access that account. We act on your instruction; we have no relationship with your bank.

4. What we ask you not to do

Do not attack the service, try to reach other people’s data, upload malware, or use it to break the law. Do not hammer the API hard enough to degrade it for everyone else — it is one small server. Security research is welcome and explicitly not a breach of these terms, provided you follow the disclosure policy.

5. Your data stays yours

We claim no ownership of anything you put in. We use it to run the service for you and for nothing else. What we hold, where it lives, and who else it touches are set out in the privacy notice, which is part of these terms.

6. Ending it

You can stop using the service whenever you like and ask us to delete your account. We can suspend or close an account that is attacking the service or being used illegally; short of that, we will not close your account without telling you why.

We may also discontinue the hosted service. If we do, we will give at least 30 days’ notice and help you get your data out. This is the part the open-source licence is load-bearing for: the same stack that runs homeaccounting.com is published, so shutting down the hosted tier cannot strand you — you can stand it up yourself.

7. No warranty, limited liability

The service is provided as-is, without warranties of any kind, to the extent the law where you live allows. We are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data or profit. Nothing here limits liability that cannot legally be limited — including for death, personal injury, fraud, or your rights as a consumer, which these terms do not take away.

Keep your own backups of anything you cannot afford to lose. That is sensible advice for any free beta service, this one included.

8. Changes

This page lives in the public site repository, so every change to it has a diff and a date. For a change that materially affects you we will give notice before it takes effect; continuing to use the service afterwards is how you accept it.

Neither these terms nor the privacy notice has been reviewed by a lawyer, and neither names a governing law, because the project has no legal entity yet. They describe the arrangement honestly in the meantime. Questions: legal@homeaccounting.com. Ready to start? Sign up.
