Trademark and brand usage policy
The HomeAccounting software is free and open source under the AGPL-3.0. The HomeAccounting name, logo and visual identity are not — they are trademarks of the project, and this page explains how you may use them.
Last updated 24 September 2026.
This is normal for open-source projects and is not a restriction on your software freedom. Its purpose is narrow: when someone sees the HomeAccounting name on a personal-finance application, they must be able to trust that it is this project, with this project’s security posture. A fork that changes the code and keeps the name breaks that guarantee for everyone.
Status
The HomeAccounting marks are unregistered, and no application is on file. This policy rests on unregistered rights — narrower than a registration, but real, and the same footing most open-source brand policies stand on. If that changes, this paragraph changes with it.
You may, without asking
- State truthfully that your project, product or article works with, is built on, integrates with or is compatible with HomeAccounting.
- Use the name in prose to refer to this project — in documentation, blog posts, talks, comparisons, reviews and academic work, including critical ones.
- Run an unmodified build of HomeAccounting for yourself, your family, your company or your clients, and call it HomeAccounting.
- Use the logo to link to the project or to indicate an integration, without altering its colours, proportions or elements.
- Redistribute unmodified official builds and packages under the project name.
You must rebrand if you
- Distribute a modified version of HomeAccounting. Change the name, the logo and the visible branding. You keep every freedom the AGPL gives you over the code; you simply may not call the result HomeAccounting.
- Operate a hosted service based on HomeAccounting for third parties under a name containing “HomeAccounting”, or in a way that implies it is the official managed service.
When you rebrand, please keep an accurate attribution such as “based on HomeAccounting” — that is encouraged, and is not a trademark use we object to.
You may never
- Use the name or logo in a way that suggests your project, service or company is official, endorsed by or affiliated with HomeAccounting when it is not.
- Register the name, a confusingly similar name, or the logo as your own trademark, company name or domain in a way that suggests official status.
- Use the marks on merchandise for sale, or in advertising for an unrelated product.
- Alter the logo, or combine it with other marks in a way that creates a new composite mark.
Domains, social accounts and package names
Do not register domain names, social-media handles or package-registry
names containing “homeaccounting” in a way that implies you are
the project. homeaccounting-monzo-provider as a community package is fine; homeaccounting-cloud.com as a competing hosted service is not.
Questions and permission
This policy cannot anticipate everything, and we would rather say yes to a reasonable use than have you guess. Ask at legal@homeaccounting.com, or open a discussion. Permission granted in writing overrides anything above.
We reserve the right to revise this policy; revisions will not be applied retroactively to uses already permitted in writing.
The code itself is under the AGPL-3.0 and is yours to fork — run it yourself, modify it, redistribute it. This page is only about the name.
